Due to the popularity of our first Pruning Workshop, which was oversubscribed, a second Pruning Workshop was held on 15th October and once again we were lucky enough to have professional gardener Geoff Hawkins to demonstrate various pruning techniques.
Eight members gathered at Catherine’s house on a slightly chilly but dry day, where Geoff showed us different types of pruning tools and how to sharpen them.
In her garden, we were shown the best way to prune several plants/shrubs/trees in order to promote healthy growth and keep them in good shape, in particular shaping and providing a framework of wires for a large wisteria growing against the wall of the house, also climbing hydrangea and rose, lavender etc.
Following a break for tea/coffee and biscuits, we went to Sue’s house for further advice on pruning a number of shrubs, including exochordia, smoke bush (cotinus), deutzia and clematis. Members found Geoff’s advice and practical demonstration most informative and entertaining and left the workshop keen to start tackling their own gardens with pruners and loppers at the ready!
